Career Transitioning When?

Transition definition: movement, passage, or change from one position, state, stage, subject, concept, etc., to another; change: the transition from one career to another is the process of finding and moving into a new career. There is no set period of time for a career transition, there is not a limit to the number of times you might decide to change. A career transition can be from one industry to another, or one that moves laterally or up and down within a company.

The following summary is from my participation at the New Tech Northwest virtual online event, ”Career Transitioning”. The guest speaker was Dr. Danielle. This presentation focused on the very beginning of any career transition. The career transitioning process starts with you.

The journey begins with a candid conversation with yourself, You have to really want to do this. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and are honest with you on how to see the world. This could include your social circle or hired professionals. Prepare to own your journey.

Next steps, conduct a SWOT Analysis  of your strong points and where to make improvements. Ask Three Questions: What is working, Where are you stuck (pausing), and What could you do differently. Hand write this exercise and be honest. Be committed and accountable on this professional journey. Review your strengths, view how you stand out from the crowd. Define specific skills you want to improve. Frame this as a challenge, not as a weakness. Check for obstacles impacting your performance, internally or externally.

Discover new trends and opportunities. Identify the transferable skills you bring to the table. Address new skills you may require to bridge any gaps. Become a long term contributor in your industry or company. Have an advocate or mentor for guidance, make a plan and write updates as needed. There will be changes, the world is dynamic.

At the end of the presentation, Dr. Danielle shared three resources:

  • Innovation You
  • Working Identity
  • Strengthfinders, From Gallup

Good luck on your journey!
